REALITYAnd maybe worst of all is the fate of the baby calves. They are separated from their mothers shortly after birth so their mothers' milk won't be "wasted" on the little calves and can instead be sold for human consumption and add to the operations' profit margins. The female calves are raised to replace their mothers as living cogs in the wheel of the industrialized dairy machine. They are "valuable" commodities. The male calves are doomed to confinement in veal hutches like these, where their movements are restricted so they cannot build any muscle and will make a tender cut of veal, the cruelest meat. Imagine life in the heat and the cold, spent in isolation, away from the herd, as these little calves bleat for their mothers. And the mortality rate for these little calves is high; since they are separated from their mothers shortly after birth, many do not develop a strong immune system, deprived of their mothers' milk. Here's a photo taken outside a calf feeding operation. These little calves were found dumped on the side of State Highway 467 between Portales and Clovis New Mexico in May of 2004.
