GOT MUCK?

KOB-TV Albuquerque reports that home video recordings, taken about 2 weeks ago (March 2004), show hundreds of dead cows and medical waste piled in huge holes at two dairies (County Line Dairy and D.B. Dairy) in the Lake Arthur area, just south of Roswell, New Mexico.

A neighbor of one of the dairies told the TV station that "there was a pit, probably 20 feet wide, 15 to 20 feet deep and 100 feet long that they were throwing in medical waste, carcasses from cattle and syringes." Another neighbor said that "it shows that they don’t have a lot of concern for the people living around them. I want to know what’s killing that many cows.” Click here for the KOB-TV story and to view some of the home video footage.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH IMPACTS OF CAFOS?

3-12-04   The American Public Health Association (APHA) has issued a resolution urging federal, state, and local government health agencies to impose a precautionary MORATORIUM on all new Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) - also known as factory farms - and to initiate and support further research on the health impacts of air and water pollution from such operations. Negative economic effects on rural communities; health problems associated with air pollution and contaminated drinking water from manure runoff; increasing antibiotics resistance caused by the routine use of antibiotics in farm animals; and serious respiratory problems found among CAFO workers and among neighboring residents are identified as the main reasons for calling for the moratorium.Click Here to read the MORATORIUM RESOLUTION. 1-24-04  An Idaho Dairy is the First in the Nation to Report its Toxic Emissions--Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulfide
