Centers for Disease Control: Fact Sheet on Nitrate in Drinking Water

Nitrate in drinking water A study of 22,000 Iowa women has found that nitrate in drinking water is associated with an increased risk for bladder cancer. Women whose average drinking water nitrate exposure level was greater than 2.46 milligrams per liter of nitrate-nitrogen were 2.83 times more likely to develop bladder cancer. [The EPA "safe" limit for nitrates is 10 milligrams per liter].

Health Effects of Nitrate: Studies explore links between nitrate and diabetes, birth defects, and low weight gain.
