Working to Keep America's Water Safe and Clean

Concerned Citizens for Clean Water ran this full-page ad in eastern New Mexico in August 2002. In June 2003, two dairy farm herds in Roosevelt County were found to be infected with Bovine Tuberculosis.

" Dairy-Friendly " or Dairy Dumb?

The dairy industry is flocking to New Mexico, leaving regions like the Chino Valley in California and the Stephenville/Bosque River region of Texas, leaving behind waste and environmental catastrophes.

They claim they like New Mexico because of our climate and our “dairy friendly” attitude. Are we “dairy friendly?” Or just “dairy dumb?”

Once You Know the REAL FACTS, You Might Not Feel So FRIENDLY.

DID YOU KNOW: That America is drowning in milk? Dairy producers have over-produced so much milk that ONE BILLION of your taxpayer dollars were converted into dry milk, stored in caves in Kansas City and warehouses across the country. And another 20 to 25 million pounds of the stuff arrives EACH WEEK. A BILLION DOLLARS.

DID YOU KNOW: That a single dairy cow produces 120 pounds of wet manure A DAY? And Curry County now has approximately 40,000 milking cows, according to figures provided to the media by Roosevelt County’s Extension Agent. A conservative estimate of these milking cows’ daily manure production amounts to the same amount of waste as is produced by a city of 1.2 MILLION people.

dairy cowDID YOU KNOW: That these dairy cows are sold for meat after about 3 years of milk production? About 1/3 of the herd is culled each year. THINK about the impact on our beef and cattle producers and the prices they receive for their beef with this added influx to the market.

DID YOU KNOW: That Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s) like dairies are potential breeding grounds for very serious diseases that can be transmitted to man? Like anthrax, leukemia, and tuberculosis, to name a few.

WE KNOW YOU KNOW: Dairy manure stinks. There’s too much here already, and more permits are on their way. Speak Up. Speak Out. Stop the Stink.
